We can certainly affirm that a camp kitchen is handy to use, there are some real issues with the correctness of a kitchen. Most people had access to a kettle, a cup and a spoon in addition to their knife.

The major problem with a kitchen is the lack of roads. With no roads, there are no large wagons to haul a kitchen around. This leaves most folks with very limited access to cooking material.

What I have found is that in a military setting for majors and colonels is the reference to the canteen. Now this canteen isn't a container for water, but is used in the sense of a storage box for refreshment. A high ranking officer needs to entertain and he will have at his disposal a box containing table settings and cooking gear. One of the better documented canteens is George Washington's.

Too often the rendezvous camp kitchen looks more like a Boy Scout collection of equipment.

Mike

A couple of small milk-painted boxes will do the trick. You don't need some big & elaborate box of stuff. As previously mentioned, they are not PC/HC for any event (except perhaps Cowboy era - Chuck box). A pot, a cup, a knife and a spoon pretty much covers 99% of the equipment you need to cook most camp meals with correct ingredients.

I have a 2 cassettes that are painted red. They work good for storage and for seating.

The regiment I play with (1st VA) has a truck for hauling stuff out... So I suppose I could describe what we have... basic set up is a Sgt's tent (A frame) with a fly attached under which we usually have 2 benches and a few folding tables. The food is kept in the tent and kitchen supplies are kept in large painted boxes all marked with our officers names. Fire is located in front of the fly and were really trying to stop using fire irons and stick with field expedient tripods made of wood. Also trying to switch from the cast iron cauldrons to tin squad pots. This set up feeds between 12-30 soldiers.
