Hello folks,
Spent last week guarding the USGA Open instead of catching bad guys, and I got to wondering when Golf was born. Seems that it was alive and well, and clubs and balls were being imported into Charleston SC in 1746. The oldest surviving rule book dates from 1744. The clubs were different but a fellow with gun stocking skills could reproduce a proper "long-nosed wood", and a good blacksmith could forge an iron for the period. Repro 18th century woods are going for 200 in the UK. What I found really interesting was that King James II of Scotland (c. 1430-1460) forbade golf for it interfered with maintaining proficiency with archery for combat..., now that means folks other than nobles were playing the game way back when, for nobles were the officers of his army..., and they weren't needed to shoot, eh? I wonder by the time of the 18th century if it had become strictly a rich guy's game?

LD
