15th Annual Nelder Grove CA Scout May 18 thru May 21

15 years ago, a few stalwart souls set out on a weekend in May to explore the central Sierra in 18th C fashion. It was such a great time, we decided to meet every year since. I look forward to sharing a campfire and swapping lies again this year. New folks are always welcome.

The Nelder Scout will be held Thursday, May 18 thru Sunday May 21. As usual, there is no leader and no itinerary. The scenario is May, 1779 in "Kentucky Territory." We have come together in the wilds of Kentucky for mutual protection during perilous times. We each have stories to share and skills to contribute.

The hiking distance to the campsite is short, but there are miles and miles to explore. Nelder Grove is a giant sequoia grove, rich in history and natural beauty. The surrounding area is all "shared-use" national forest. You are responsible for your own fire, food, shelter, entertainment and safety.

— We usually have a fun blanket shoot of some kind on saturday
— We often have impromptu 18th C skill demos. If you have a skill you want to practice or share, you are welcome to do so.
— You need to have a campfire permit if you build a fire.
— Bring a 3-5 gallons of water to share. We keep the water hidden away in a “spring location.”
— Weather is unpredictable! Camp elevation is about 5600 ft. Check the forecast and be prepared.

Directions: Take Hwy 41 north out of Oakhurst, CA towards Yosemite Natl Park for a few miles. You will drive past Road 222 to Bass Lake. A bit further, turn right on road 632 (Sierra Sky Ranch road). Drive 4 miles or so, just past the Calvin Crest Christian Camp turn off, then look for a road on the right-- the "Bass Lake Vista turn off.” Turn right and follow the posted British Broad Arrow signs to where we park. Hike up the trace to camp. If you get “bewildered” fire your gun and a scouting party will be sent to escort you to camp. Beware of raiding parties… and Godspeed.

sorry Nelder Grove has been cancelled. But we will be back next year for sure.
