Hey, I wondered about how most people usually employ their belt axes and tomahawks when out in the woods or at gatherings. Also, how many people on here have ever hunted with them?
It seems unnecessary when you have a gun (and brutal?) but Henry Timberlake mentioned the skill of throwing tomahawks in his account of travelling in the Overhill country. Some black bears got too close to the camp and he wrote that they could have had them for supper had they the skill that the Cherokee possessed.
I have read about the tomahawk being about two feet long but this seems too long and many today have a haft about as long as one's forearm (if they are for throwing).

I have used mine to great effect dressing deer by severing the ribs from the sternum, and to cut the circle of bones at the pelvis to simply removing the anal canal.

As to hunting with them, I have thrown them at small game on the ground, but the spinning handle always gets in the way of the blade striking my intended dinner.

I carry my tomahawk while hunting, but not actually hunted with one.
